Why

There is currently no freely available spot colour system, which makes supporting spot colour in F/LOSS graphics programs difficult, if not impossible.

Fields other than print design (eg. the natural sciences, food science) which already use commercial colour matching systems could benefit greatly from and might be likely to adopt an open colour standard.
